about
Benedick’s songs channel experiences from a decade spent outside the UK, as well as deep experiences the artist had in reunion with the Wise Isles. Reflecting explorations of self as well as the world, lyrics in English, Spanish and Portuguese draw upon such inspirations as wilderness quests, dreams and trance states. A warm Mediterranean feel shines through his compositions, and the influence of farther musical cultures, from Afro-Brazil to the Sahara and from rumba to gnaoua, is never far from them. He puts this down to osmosis after years living in Spain and travels in the Americas, North and West Africa and West Asia. After frequenting the Spanish festival circuit as part of Madrid-based, English-speaking band Not My Circus, Benedick released his first solo record in 2019 under the moniker Purusha Sound. This eponymous EP was produced by Rob Pemberton, who went on to produce for The Staves, Holysseus Fly and Rachael Dadd, amongst others. After Covid-19, a Master’s in Ethnomusicology, and a move to a Canary Island, Benedick married a more organic yet contemporary sound with lessons he learned from drawing on ancient wisdom. In 2025, recording began on this next chapter.

Benedick is also a member of the groups Lovejam Collective (vocals/guitar/bass/percurssion) and Cheetah Ram (drums/vocals).
